About 350,000 Cardiac Arrests happen outside the Hospital setting every year. Approximately  7 out of 10 Cardiac Arrests happen at home.

Unfortunately, half of these people do not receive bystander CPR while waiting for an ambulance.

If you have not been trained in CPR, you can still help by giving chest compression only CPR to circulate blood to the heart and brain until Medical Professionals arrive.

If a person is unresponsive (does not respond if you tap them or shout) and is not breathing normally (only gasping), Call 9-1-1- immediately and ask someone to find an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Begin chest compressions, pushing hard on the center of the chest over the lower half of the breastbone. After every time you push, let the chest come all the way back up. Continue chest compressions until Medical Professionals arrive and take over.

Let gratitude be your first thought when you close your eyes to sleep, and your first thought when you awaken.
Upon awakening each morning, before you open your eyes, think of 3 people you are grateful for.  Visualize their faces, smile and feel happy. 
When you lie down to sleep, close your eyes, think of 3 things you are grateful for, smile and feel happy.  Gratitude and Happiness.

Minnesota Woman Revived With CPR and AED After Sudden Cardiac Arrest

For a positive outcome, it's so important to have people in the community who are trained in responding to a sudden cardiac arrest and other emergencies requiring CPR.  For someone in Ventricular Fibrillation (the most common, abnormal, life threatening heart rhythm in adults), they lose a 10 percent chance of survival for every minute they go without defibrillation.  Minutes do matter, and having people in our community trained in CPR and AED use can give them the best chance of survival.

Cardiac Arrest                                               "Electrical Problem" within the Heart

Cardiac Arrest is a sudden, unexpected electrical problem within the heart that disrupts its normal pumping action and causes an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).  The heart can not pump blood effectively.  The person will become unresponsive and stop breathing or may have gasping irregular breaths.  Call 9-1-1 immediately, start CPR and use an AED (automated external defibrillator) as soon as it is available.  Cardiac Arrest may be reversible. You may save a life!

Manage Your Stress

Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and in many cases is preventable.  Unmanaged stress can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease.  When someone experiences a perceived significant stress, the Sympathetic Nervous System is stimulated and "Fight or Flight" hormones are released.  These hormones can save our life in a life threatening situation, but on a regular basis, they can contribute to heart disease by causing  increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, anxiety, fatigue and sleep problems. Consider Mindfulness Meditation, Diaphragmatic Breathing, and nature walks to trigger a relaxation response.  Learn to control your breath, slow your heart rate, and find a quiet calm and peace amongst the chaos.

Stroke
Stroke is the second leading cause of death in the world, and is the leading cause of disability in the U.S.  Strokes claim 6.2 million lives every year.  Spot a Stroke FAST! ​

 F -  Face Drooping - Does one side of the face droop or is it numb?  Ask                                 
        a person to smile. Is the smile uneven?
A  - Arm Weakness - Is one arm weak or numb?  Ask the person to raise  
        both arms.  Does one arm drift downward?
S  - Speech Difficulty - Is the speech slurred?  Is the person unable speak 
       or hard to understand?  Ask them to repeat a simple sentence.  Is it    
       repeated correctly?
T  - Time to Call 9-1-1 - If someone shows any of these symptoms, even
        if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 for transport to a primary or 
        comprehensive Stroke Center hospital immediately.

    Check the time so you know when the first symptoms appeared. 
 
Other Signs and Symptoms of a stroke include sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion , trouble speaking or understanding, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination or sudden severe headache with no know cause.  Call 9-1-1 immediately for transport to a primary or comprehensive Stroke Center.

A new procedure (Mechanical Thrombectomy) should be done within 6 hours of acute stroke symptoms for the worst, most disabling strokes, after receiving tPA (a clot-busting drug).  Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) has long been the mainstay of treatment and should be given intravenously within 4.5 hours to be effective.​
